Its controls sit between the mechanical bodies before it and the electronic ones after. Autofocus, programmed exposure, matrix metering and an LCD viewfinder display came with it, and shutter speed, lens aperture, metering pattern and exposure compensation each kept a dedicated dial.
It takes every autofocus and manual-focus F-mount lens, and the meter coupling cam moves aside for lenses made before 1977. It is one of three Nikon film bodies that give full matrix metering with AI manual-focus lenses.
Metering depends on the finder fitted. The standard DP-20 gives matrix, center-weighted and spot.
Everything except rewinding needs battery power, which comes from standard AA cells in a bottom-mounted pack.
