A high-contrast panchromatic black and white film revived by Italy's FILM Ferrania from a 1960s cinema formula.
The formula comes from the cinema stock Ferrania supplied to Italian directors in the middle of the last century, and it carries an unusually high silver content.
That shows up as deep blacks and a steep tonal curve. Highlights clip sooner than a modern general-purpose film would, and there is very little grain to speak of at box speed.
Ferrania still sells it as an alpha, a formulation it intends to keep changing on what users report back. It rewards careful metering and punishes guessing.
